Mr. Toby Morgan, Senior Manager of The Climate Group, introduced their initiative, EP100. EP100 is a global corporate commitment-based climate action initiative with over 125 businesses committed to measuring and reporting on energy efficiency improvements. Their mission is to accelerate energy efficiency improvement rates among the world’s leading businesses to achieve net zero by 2050.

Mr. Morgan explained that human-caused climate change is already affecting many weather and climate extremes in every region across the globe, but the current climate plans are inadequate to meet the goals of the Paris Agreement. He emphasized that the world must rapidly shift away from burning fossil fuels and climate finance, for both mitigation and adaptation, must increase dramatically. He stated that if we take immediate, transformative action, a safer, more just and sustainable world will be within our grasp.

He then analyzed the current state of energy efficiency in Japan and pointed out that while the government of Japan has put in place benchmarks that are comparable with those of the EU, few companies have reached them. He also introduced Japanese companies that are participating in the EP100.
