Online Seminar The Marine Debris Problem in ASEAN and Japan

In order for ASEAN countries and Japan to accelerate the resolution of the marine debris problem, it is important to understand each other’s views and efforts and demonstrate synergies. Keizai Koho Center, in cooperation with KSI Strategic Institute for Asia Pacific in Malaysia, held an online seminar to bring together opinion leaders, businesses and the media from Japan and ASEAN to discuss this important issue.

Ms. Cheryl Rita Kaur, Head of the Centre for Straits of Malacca of the Maritime Institute of Malaysia, shared her views on the marine debris issues and challenges in ASEAN. She was followed by Mr. Toshihiko Higuchi, General Manager of the Chemicals Management Department of the Japan Chemical Industry Association who explained the Japanese Plastic Industry’s efforts to reduce plastic waste on behalf of JaIME (Japan Initiative for Marine Environment). The discussion was moderated by Dr. Atsuhiko Isobe, Professor of the Center for Oceanic and Atmospheric Research of Kyushu University. A total of 70 people, including businesses, industry representatives and journalists from Japan and ASEAN attended.
