Society 5.0 – Co-creating the Future

Japan is committed to Society 5.0. It is the vision of an emerging form of society characterized as “Imagination Society” enabled by the digital transformation.
On November 13, 2018, Keidanren released a proposal titled “Society 5.0 – Co-creating the future -” setting out the concept of, and drawing a concrete picture of Society 5.0 as a future society that we wish to create with the world.

Digital Transformation (DX)

The new Society 5.0 (Creative Society) will be a society that we will create ourselves by combining digital transformation (DX) with the imagination and creativity of diverse people to create values and solve problems. The viewpoint of building a bright future society through DX is important.
On May 19, 2020, Keidanren released the proposal, Digital Transformation–Opening Up the Future through Co-Creation of Values.

. The NEW Growth Strategy

. The NEW Growth Strategy was announced by Keidanren on November 17, 2020. The current pandemic has forced the global economy into recession and shed light on the disparities that had been growing wider under capitalism. Under these circumstances, as a major player in a capitalist society, the business community has a duty to co-create and provide value from interactions with diverse entities through business activities and to actively engage in finding solutions to challenges such as environmental issues and economic disparity.

The only way to establish sustainable capitalism through Society 5.0 is by embracing the demands of multiple stakeholders, including consumers, workers, local and global communities and the natural environment, and co-creating value through dialogue. The key to this is digital transformation, or DX. DX makes social issues visible, balances optimization for the whole and the part, and creates diverse value.

What is Society 5.0?

Japan will take the initiative in guiding the world to a brighter future by demonstrating an ideal concept of the next society, named as Society 5.0.1

Keidanren has redefined Society 5.0 as an “Imagination Society”. People are expected to exercise their rich imaginations to identify a variety of needs and challenges scattered throughout society and scenarios to solve them, as well as creativity to realize such solutions making use of digital technologies and data. Society 5.0 will be an Imagination Society, where digital transformation combines with the imagination and creativity of diverse people to bring about “problem solving” and “value creation” that lead us to sustainable development. It is a concept that can contribute to the achievement of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) adopted by the United Nations.
